Why I’m building Pip
This started with a question my own family is beginning to face.
People in my family are getting to the age where having their own phone is starting to become a real conversation. And I understand why. You want them to be able to call you, message you and have a bit more independence.
But I also look at a normal smartphone and think: do they really need access to all of that yet? Social feeds, an open internet, endless apps and content designed to keep them looking at a screen. It feels like a huge jump just to solve the simple problem of being able to stay in touch.
That’s where Pip came from. I wanted to build the phone I’d feel good about giving to my own kids — something that still feels exciting and properly theirs, but where the adults around them can decide what they have access to and when.
I don’t want technology to replace childhood. I want my kids outside, seeing friends, learning things, getting muddy, finding their way around and gradually doing more on their own. Pip should support that independence without becoming the centre of it.
